It’s time for The Return of the Sugar Club Survivors! – back after a 2 year break ( when you get to that age you need time to recuperate!)
A Bank Holiday weekend night out for anybody who was into ‘Alternative Music’ between the years of 1991 and 1999 in Peterborough is back at The Met Lounge on Bridge Street on Friday August 24.
Every Saturday night meant only one place to be – the VIP Suite upstairs in the function room at 5th Avenue Nightclub Peterborough where from 9pm through til 2am, Peterborough’s ‘alternative’ crowd gathered for the weekly club night known as ‘The Sugar Club’.
Twenty-seven years in the making – who would’e thought that back in August 1991 a promoter and a gaggle of young DJ’s would start a night that’s seen Madchester Baggy / Grunge / Brit Pop / Big Beat and more survive through to the current day!
However, this part of The Sugar Club life story encases the initial years from 1991-1999 when the club was based at the old 5th Avenue function room
Memories of sitting on stairs, (and being told to get off them!) jumping off window ledges, a massive sound system, a bar continually understaffed and toilets that were continually underwater!
But for some it was the best Saturday night out ever – relationships were made and still continue to this day.
It’s time for the original ‘Sugar Club Survivors’ to come out and play one more time as the original team of DJ’s dust down the CD’s and relive those memories one more time!
And this event is as close to the actual starting date as we they make it – August 10th 1991 was the original opening night.
Friday August 24 is the date for the diaries. Doors open from 9pm and drinks are 90p house spirits for 90 minutes from 9pm.

If you were 18 back in August 1991 when this whole adventure started then you’re now closer to retirement than you are to the legal drinking age! But that doesn’t matter, you’ll probably have the next day off work so head down and see those friends you’ve not seen since August two years ago as we remember once again what made the 90’s so memorable for all of us!
