WE REMEMBER

Hundreds of people marked Remembrance Sunday in and around Peterborough and on Remembrance Day today (November 11) taking part in the 2 minute silence…

Royal Air Force Wittering personnel took part in the service in Peterborough on Sunday as well as Stamford and Oakham to honour the Fallen.

A packed Broad Street in Stamford greeted a throng of veterans, members of all three armed forces, and an immaculately turned-out detachment from 3 Squadron RAF Regiment led the remembrance parade.

Wreaths were placed at the historic town’s memorial by many of Stamford’s prominent figures including the Mayor, Cllr Clement Walden. RAF Wittering Station Commander, Group Captain Damian Alexander laid the Station’s own wreath.

Peterborough’s majestic cathedral and city precincts became a sea of uniforms as members of the armed forces, veterans and the city’s foremost citizens joined to remember the sacrifices of conflicts past and present.

In Oakham the Royal Air Force presence was marked principally by RAF Wittering based 504 Royal Auxiliary Air Force Squadron, who received the freedom of the town earlier this year.

A service of remembrance was held in the beautiful All Saint’s Church and the lesson was read by Dr Laurence Howard, Lord Lieutenant of Rutland and Honorary Air Commodore of 504 Squadron.

Today (November 11) over 300 Station personnel from RAF Wittering gathered in the hangar of 2 Mechanical Transport Squadron for a special service of remembrance.

Group Captain Alexander said; “Everybody deserves an opportunity to reflect on the Fallen. The breadth of our Remembrance Day coverage; Stamford, Peterborough, Oakham, Wittering and many other villages, demonstrates that RAF Wittering personnel feel privileged to help in that process.”

He continued; “Today we have marked Armistice Day at RAF Wittering, with a special commemorative service. That so many people from the Station took the time to attend shows that we have a culture of dignified respect, and recognise our deep obligation to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.”
