Great news – Stamford is to host its second Georgian Festival next year!
South Kesteven District Council has announced its decision to build on the amazing success of the inaugural event in 2013 which saw 22,000 people visit on the busiest day – a record for the town.
Portfolio holder for grow the economy, Cllr Frances Cartwright said: “Last year’s event was hugely successful and showed Stamford at its very best to an enormous number of visitors who clearly decided to spend, spend, spend as many traders reported that they had to dash to their wholesalers on Saturday night after record sales which meant they needed to restock so they could trade again on Sunday.”
The features of last year’s three day event were talks, recitals, shows, tours, rides, a tea dance, a Georgian style cricket match and a re-run of the colourful and famous Stamford Bull Run.
Cllr Cartwright added: “The feedback from local people and visitors has been excellent and that is why we have decided to do it again. We haven’t arrived at a date yet as we want to talk to other groups and try to find the best fit in the local calendar.”
Portfolio holder for leisure, arts and culture, Cllr Bob Adams, said that England’s most complete stone town was a perfect backdrop for a Georgian Festival.
“And because the period covers a huge time span between 1714 and 1837 there is enormous scope to cover a huge range of subjects.
“We may well see the jugglers and stilt walkers again but other possibles could be fire-eaters, contortionists, hoops, hopscotch, coconut shies, swing boats – the list goes on and on.
“Over the coming months we will be talking with the Town Council and other interested parties to make sure the second Stamford Georgian Festival is just as successful as the first,” said Cllr Adams.
