Leslie Mann and Cameron Diaz are a surprisingly funny double act in this payback comedy.
Your traditional rom-com will often end in an emotional dash to the airport, or a montage of the leading couple’s dates during their first slow-mo kiss. Rest assured that this is not a traditional rom-com.
The Other Woman sees a successful lawyer named Carly (Cameron Diaz) who pays a surprise visit to her boyfriend, only to be greeted at the door by his wife, Kate (Leslie Mann) – who almost instantly figures out that she’s been betrayed.
Confused, Kate feels she has nobody to talk to and turns to the mistress, Carly, for advice. Despite Carly’s best attempts not to, the two heartbroken females become friends. When yet another affair is discovered, Carly and Kate recruit the other woman (Kate Upton) to help them plot their revenge on the cheating rat.
For the first half of the film, it feels like The Other Woman doesn’t know exactly what it wants to be. One minute we’re watching a smart and sharply written movie, the next it’s a goofy slapstick chick flick. It’s the second half that really stands out – where it’s consistently silly but entertaining. Once the three women are united together against a common cheating enemy, the fun really begins.
The onscreen acting chemistry between Cameron Diaz and Leslie Mann is part of what makes this movie work. My wife assures me that their portrayal of a developing female friendship is spot on, and we really warm to both the characters as the movie develops.
Overall, it takes a while to get into the film, but your patience should pay off. There are enough laughs here to make you feel like you got your money’s worth. With my last few trips to the cinema being to watch big explosive blockbusters, this was a refreshing change of pace.
