This carries on from right where The Lego Movie left us, with the same intelligent and humorous style – this time from acclaimed Robot Chicken helmer Chris McKay – that made the 2014 animation such a surprisingly refreshing hit.

In essence this IS a Batman movie – just tongue-in-cheek and in computer-generated brick form.

That is its first stroke of genius, but by providing the most action-packed super hero movie of all-time – as well as showcasing a whole host of legendary villainous icons – it’s undoubtedly colourfully accessible for kids of all ages, while offering the same cleverly intuitive adult humour and old-school nods that makes it digestible for parents too.

The movie is generally based around the very simple premise of ‘teamwork paying dividends’ as the Caped Crusader (Will Arnett continuing his role from the first film) continues to lap-up the adulation of saving Gotham by night – defeating The Joker (Zach Galifianakis) and the city’s villainous elite on a regular basis – but when he returns to the bat cave, he’s struggling to come to terms with the loneliness of his life.

This all changes when the new commissioner Barbara Gordon (Rosario Dawson) vows to work with the Dark Knight; Bruce Wayne inadvertently adopts enthusiastic orphan boy Dick Grayson/Robin (Michael Cera); and Joker schemes a plot to unleash the world’s most notable villains – which include everyone from the Gremlins to the Daleks, King Kong to Godzilla, and Voldemort to Sauron – via Superman’s (Channing Tatum) Phantom Zone prison chamber.

This all adds up to one pleasurably consistent adventure – that despite getting a bit pretentious and out-staying its welcome a tad – combines all of its commercial elements to hit with a satisfying Adam West-inspired ‘ka-pow’.

Now just for The Lego Ninjago Movie, The Lego Movie 2 – and the inevitable Lego saturation for the next few years . . .
