The lead actors’ onscreen chemistry is good, but the dialogue they’re given is not.
The trailer for Let’s Be Cops shows off an original premise and provides gags that would have you believe the comedy is on par with last year’s The Heat or even this year’s 22 Jump Street. Unfortunately that’s not the case.
Ryan (New Girl’s Jake Johnson) and Justin (Damon Wayans Jr. – also from New Girl) dress up as cops for a costume party. They soon realise that people think they are genuine officers – which gets them the female attention and respect they’ve always craved.
Ryan gets carried away with their masquerade, and before long he’s ordered bullet-proof vests and even a cop car on eBay.Things are going great for the pair until they get on the wrong side of the Russian mob and corrupt cops.
22 Jump Street, Beverly Hills Cop, and Bad Boys are often used as prime examples of filmmakers getting cop comedies right. I fear that Let’s Be Cops will from this point on be used as an example of filmmakers getting it wrong.
Don’t get me wrong though; it does have some good laughs, but is ultimately not the comedy it could have been. I must also give credit to Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. for their great onscreen chemistry, but that alone doesn’t make up for the terrible script.
