FILM REVIEW: I, TONYA (15)

Get your skates on and go see Margot Robbie in her best performance yet!

“There’s no such thing as truth. Everyone has their own truth,” says Tonya Harding – played by Margot Robbie. The Wolf of Wall Street actress stars in this ‘kind of’ true story about an American figure skater and her involvement in one of the most sensational scandals in sports history.

Harding was the first American woman to complete a triple axel in competition, but she never received the praise and recognition that she deserved from judges due to her redneck roots. Things became even worse for the skater after an infamous, ill-conceived, and even more poorly executed attack happens to her fellow Olympic competitor, Nancy Kerrigan.

What exactly was Harding’s involvement in the crime? The reason I referred to I, Tonya as a ‘kind of’ true story is because it’s inconsistently told from the perspective of numerous people – mostly Harding, her abusive ex-husband (Sebastian Stan) and her feisty and ice-cold mother (Allison Janney). If you’re hoping to get answers or insight from watching this film, you’ll be disappointed – as we’re left to draw our own conclusions based on the multiple perspectives.

What is consistent amongst the different accounts is that Harding was clearly a larger-than-life force of nature who constantly fought battles both on and off the ice. Margot Robbie captures the pain and frustrations of the character perfectly. This is her best performance yet!

With Sebastian Stan and Allison Janney also flawless as the support cast and stunning cinematography (particularly on the ice), I’m surprised that I, Tonya was not nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. Much like Tonya Harding, the movie has been overlooked by judges as a whole – but at least Robbie (nominated for Lead Actress) and Janney (nominated for Supporting Actress) are getting the credit they deserve.

Overall, I, Tonya is entertaining, tense and (despite the dark tone) even laugh-out-loud funny at times.
