FILM REVIEW: GET HARD (15)

Better than I’d feared, but worse than I’d hoped.

Will Ferrell films are hit-or-miss. This one is somewhere in the middle.

I wasn’t too impressed by the trailer for Get Hard. I thought the concept would work great as a sketch, but might not be strong enough to keep me hooked for an entire movie. I was right. But, it has to be said, although the story itself becomes rather tiresome towards the end, there are enough good one-liners thrown in to get you through the duration of the film.

The story sees James King (Will Ferrell), a millionaire financial whiz living the highlife alongside his fiancée (Alison Brie). King’s luxurious lifestyle has left him a little out of touch with the ‘real world’. Soon into the movie he’s arrested for fraud and embezzlement and sentenced to 10 years in a maximum security prison.

Fearing that he’d not last 5 minutes in such a place, he hires a man named Darnell (Kevin Hart) – who washes his car – to teach him how to handle himself in prison.

What follows is a series of improvised one-liners from two of America’s most popular comedians. Some work, whilst others fall flat. Thankfully, because they’re so frequent, just as you’ve started thinking how poor one gag is, you’re laughing out loud at the next. And that is your reason to see this film! The jokes make up for what is a pretty badly written script.
