FILM REVIEW: DON JON (18)

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has written and directed a film where he plays a sex addict who dates Scarlett Johansson. Well played Joseph.

To be fair to the star of Looper and The Dark Knight Rises, there is a lot more to this movie.

Levitt plays Jon Martello, a man who has no problem attracting and sleeping with beautiful women. However, none of them measure up to the porn on his computer. As he puts it…“I lose myself with porn.” Jon decides to review his habit after meeting a beautiful New Jersey girl named Barbara Sugarman (Johansson).

But it turns out that even the woman of his dreams can’t stop him sneaking off to his computer. It’s not long into their relationship that she catches him in the act, and this is where the fun begins.

Barbara is very much against her boyfriend’s addiction. Jon stressed that her obsession with romantic comedies was just as damaging to a relationship, creating similarly false expectations. Who’s right and who’s wrong? Check out the film, listen to both sides of the story, and make up your own decision.

Don Jon does feel quite repetitive at times and is not quite the lough-out-loud comedy that the trailer would make you think it is.

Ultimately though, this is an entertaining and refreshing take on the Hollywood romantic comedy genre. I’m already looking forward to seeing Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s next project as a writer and director.
