The bottom line is you’re going to love this!
You’ve probably already noticed my generous 4 star rating? I certainly didn’t expect that would happen when walking into my screening of a film titled Captain Underpants – after all, nobody despises potty humour more than yours truly.
Based on Dav Pilkey’s bestselling book series, DreamWorks Animation’s latest film tells the story of two overly imaginative prank-obsessed boys named George (voiced by Kevin Hart) and Harold (Thomas Middleditch). Together, the boys create comics about the adventures of a Superhero named Captain Underpants.
Meanwhile… in the real world, their grumpy principal (Ed Helms) vows to split up the friends to put an end to their mischief. As the principal is about to do so, George desperately tries to hypnotise him using a cheap, plastic ring found in his cereal box.
It works! Consequently, the principal believes he is the ridiculously enthusiastic and dim-witted Captain Underpants – yes, the boys’ very own creation.
If you thought (based on the title) that Captain Underpants would rely too heavily on potty humour, you’d be right… but it works! Believe it or not, fart jokes can actually be delivered in a smart way. It is very self-aware.
What works best is how we see the movie through the boys’ wild imaginations – allowing the filmmakers to have some fun with it. The sock-puppet scene in particular is the most fun sequence I’ve seen at the cinema in a long time.
Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie is the perfect film to take the kids to see during the summer holidays. In fact, I took my 8 year-old Niece (Erin) to see it. Check out the video below to hear Erin’s thoughts on it.
