DRAGONFLY GETS A REVAMP

It’s always great to see local pubs revived and The Dragonfly in Orton is one that’s been completely transformed!

It’s been tough times for many community pubs so it’s encouraging to see people make a real go of things and the revamp at this long standing local looks set to take it into a brand new era.

The Dragonfly Pub in Orton Malborne has just undergone a full refurbishment – the first since in was originally built back in 1978.

If you associate the pub with having a bit of a troubled past based on a reputation from well over ten years ago,  it’s time to take a fresh look as things have changed dramatically.

The Dragonfly is now a family friendly place with no trouble at all thanks to landlady, Toni Avis. Toni has been managing the pub for just over two years, and has strived to make it a friendly, fun place to be – and she’s done a mighty fine job, including pushing for the recent refurbishment to be completed.

You’ll regularly find locals and their children in the bars on a Friday afternoon, and throughout the weekend. The only proviso being that all children must vacate the premises before 7pm (unless they are accompanied by an adult at a private function). A range of real ales are served, along with Coors Light, Fosters, Carling, Carlsberg, Stella, John Smiths and Guinness, along with Carling Cider and Strongbow on tap, plus a huge array of bottled beverages.

The main lounge features a semi circular bar and has many cosy seating areas divided by brick wall partitions. Pictures of dragonflies adorn the walls and there is a large glass dragonfly feature above the bar situated above the projector screen, where they regularly show football matches on SKY Sports. There are a further two TV sets, which means more than one game can be screened at any one time.

Adjoining the lounge there is a very spacious function room, which also has a bar and is used for all manner of events from birthdays, christenings, weddings and funerals to pool and darts matches, even occasional live music. It costs £50 to hire the room, which is used to pay for a member of staff to work the bar. Parties can be catered for, and you can evensupply your own food if you wish to do so.

There is also a quiz night on the first Friday of every month and a fun karaoke night held on the last Friday of every month. Many of these are ‘themed’ nights, so fancy dress is an option. Just check out their Facebook page for details of upcoming events (www.facebook.com/Dragonflyorton).

So if you fancy a  party or a pint you’ll find The Dragonflly at the Herlington Centre is worth a  fresh look.
