AFRICAN BEATS @ THE KEY

Writer: ESP OnlineESP Online

There’s a great opportunity coming up to see live African music played in Peterborough.

AFRICA!  is the first time that an exclusively-African event has been held at the Key Theatre.

Organiser Richard Ferris told ESP – “I’ve been keen to see the establishment of an African music scene in Peterborough, and have been DJ-ing a few African music events for the past 2-3 years. There is a growing, but dispersed African community across Peterborough. African migrants to the city have arrived from many different countries, with widely differing cultures. I am keen to see this diversity reflected better in the programming of music and the arts in Peterborough, and this vision is shared by Vivacity.”

Working in partnership with the African Heritage Centre, based in Thorney www.africanheritagecentre.com the purpose of the event is to celebrate the diversity of musical styles that characterise the continent, with a strong emphasis on dancing.

Wedzi Zvirevo, who runs the Centre with his wife, Nyemu Gururipa, is an inspiring musician and teacher. Together, they run educational, music-based events in schools and other community groups, promoting African culture and providing people with the opportunity to experience it through live music. Wedzi fronts the band, Batanai, who are the main act for AFRICA! on Saturday May 4. They will be supported by Shumba Mbira and tunes from DJ Red Snapper.

Tickets for the event are priced at £10, and are available through the Key Theatre Box Office on 01733 207239 or e-mail key.theatre@vivacity-peterborough.com
