Everyone’s been crying out for more live music and for top acts to come to Peterborough and the weekend saw several star names take to the stage at the Peterborough Arena – now here’s hoping for even more! ESP’s Mikey Clarke reports…
After 10 years of DJing in Peterborough, I’m haunted by one evening in particular. I was having a great evening in Flares – the room was packed and the dance-floor was full, when suddenly the power went out. There was no music and I had no idea what to do whilst 300 clubbers stood there booing me. Whilst Peter Andre performed at the Peterborough Arena on Saturday September 28, the same thing happened to him. I feel your pain Pete.
Luckily this was just a brief glitch in what turned out to be a fantastic weekend of live music in Peterborough.
Saturday night saw the Australian singer headlining and performing alongside Liberty X, and both gave incredible performances.
Even those who aren’t fans of their music would not deny that they performed with an incredible amount of energy.
Fresh from ITV’s The Big Reunion, Liberty X gave a great supporting performance and had plenty of fans in the crowd of their own who were loving their biggest hit Just A Little!
Also bouncing around the stage on Saturday was singing, songwriting and rapping duo, GTF. I grabbed a few words with the guys (Jay and Billy) after they performed their new single, a remake of Everywhere.
They told me – “The people of Peterborough have been amazing. When the audience gives more, it makes us want to give them more back.”
When asked whether they were fans of Peter Andre, they said – “To be honest, we weren’t too familiar with his music until today. We were listening to him during his sound check and he was really good, so yes, I’d say we’re fans now.”
GTF were just two of the thousands of Andre fans around me. We all know the Flava singer has got the dance moves, but people may have been surprised to see him also being extremely up close and personal with his audience too.
The crowd (90 per cent women) lapped it up and screamed like teenage girls – particularly the one lucky lady who joined him on stage during a song.
With the reality TV star belting out hits such as Mysterious Girl and Behind Closed Doors, it’s fair to say people went home satisfied.
The following day (Sunday September 29), the Peterborough Arena hosted Billy Ocean and Alexander O’Neal. The two R&B icons had the crowds dancing and singing along to their hits and recreated some classic 80’s magic.
Billy Ocean’s lost none of his charm and his fans were delighted with favourites like When the Going Gets Tough, Get Outta My Dreams, Caribbean Queen, Love Really Hurts and many more. ESP’s Emma Bothamley commented – “He was amazing, absolutely brilliant! The famous smile is still there and the voice is as good as ever.”
Alexander O’Neal took to the stage first and proved he’s still got it, belting out tracks like Critisize and Fake.
With the Peterborough Arena managing to attract names like these, brought to the city by local promoters Soundstage One, who knows who we’ll soon have performing locally. Let’s hope this is just the start!
