NETFLIX FILM REVIEW: TRIPLE FRONTIER (15)

After a lean week at the cinema – why not take advantage of Netflix bringing the cinema to you?

With the likes of Sky, Prime and Netflix bringing cinematic quality releases straight to your house – sometimes alongside a limited theatrical run – there’s been a definite shift in the way we’re going to view major releases from now on.

And this is one of the biggest so far in terms of star power.

With no less than four A-list Hollywood stars that have headlined prominent movies – Ben Affleck (Argo), Oscar Isaac (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Charlie Hunnam (King Arthur: Legend of the Sword) and Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy) – this is no standard TV movie with production values that could easily bless your local multiplex.

The narrative may be a little all over the place to stop it from being an absolute must-see, but this is solid action-thriller fare that does more rights than wrongs – particularly with the talent at hand.

Five former Special Forces operatives reunite to plan a heist in a sparsely populated zone near the Andes on the Brazil-Peru border – after Santiago ‘Pope’ Garcia (Isaac) finds the location of a drug lord who’s housing millions in his forest mansion.

Veteran Tom ‘Redfly’ Davis (Affleck), instructor William ‘Ironhead’ Miller (Hunnam) his UFC-fighting brother Ben (Hedlund) and Perdo Pascal’s (The Equalizer 2) pilot Francisco ‘Catfish’ Morales, all get coaxed into the dangerous mission by Garcia – but their loyalties are tested when things don’t quite go to plan.

Despite the sometimes choppy scripting and editing, through tense moments and some breathtaking locales the story unfolds in a competent and satisfying fashion that will undoubtedly whet-the-appetite for movies of this standard on similar media platforms in the future.

It’s less gung-ho than the comparable films of its ilk – like Lone Survivor etc – but with its strong cast and ambitious story this gritty heist thriller is above the frontier in terms of genre comparisons – and is well worth getting the popcorn in for.
