Olympian turned dance star Louis Smith is returning to the Peterborough stage this year ahead of a London season.
City fans of our homegrown hero will get to see him in his latest show, Bring It On, ahead of audiences in the capital when it comes to the New Theatre Peterborough from November 26 to December 4 for eight performances.
The former gymnast and winner of Strictly Come Dancing stars as Cameron alongside Amber Davies as Campbell in this musical based on the successful film of the same name.
Louis said – “I’m absolutely over the moon that we’re able to announce Bring It On finally coming to the stage. It’s been such a tough time for so many people over the last year, so to be able to have the opportunity to bring some much needed joy to everyone and dust the cobwebs off at the same time, is something I literally can’t wait for. Being able to do it in my home town of Peterborough is just the icing on the cake. Bring it on!”
ESP has followed Louis’ career since the four-time gymnastic Olympic medallist shot to fame in 2008 when he won the first British gymnastic medal in 100 years at the Beijing Olympics. Following his success at the London 2012 Olympic Games Louis later won that year’s BBC Strictly Come Dancing, before going on to win the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special in 2014. On stage he’s appeared in Rip It Up in both the West End and on tour – we saw it and it was brilliant fun!
His co-star in this musical production is perhaps best known as the winner of ITV’s Love Island in 2017. Amber Davies made her professional stage debut in 2019 to critical and audience acclaim as Judy Bernly in Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5 The Musical at the Savoy Theatre and subsequently on the UK tour.
David Hutchinson, CEO Selladoor Worldwide said – “Since we took on the New Theatre in 2019 it has been our long term ambition to bring the West End to Peterborough, so I am absolutely thrilled that the New Theatre will be the first venue in the country to open Bring It On this autumn, ahead of the show transferring to London’s prestigious South Bank Centre.
“This is the UK professional premiere production based on the well loved film, and features one of Peterborough’s homegrown stars, Louis Smith – alongside a stellar cast and creative team. I’m delighted that our fantastic Peterborough audiences will genuinely get to see the show first.”
Inspired by the 2000 film of the same name, Bring It On The Musical features an original score by the multi award winning creator of Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Pulitzer Prize winning Tom Kitt, composer of Next To Normal.
This high energy musical sees cheerleader and newly crowned Squad Captain, Campbell, about to embark on her best senior year at Truman High School. When she’s forced to move to the neighbouring hard-knock Jackson High, Campbell fears her life is over. But an unlikely friendship catapults Campbell back into contention with a powerhouse squad and the fire to achieve the impossible.
Tickets are now on sale from just £18. The New Theatre will also be introducing a new ticket protection option for bookers wishing to book worry-free for future performances.
