FILM REVIEW: THE VOICES (15)

Ryan Reynolds is predictably charming and goofy one minute, but unexpectedly spine-chilling the next.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when walking into a screening of The Voices, and to be honest I wasn’t entirely sure what I’d just seen when I walked out. The film is a constant genre-bending mix of drama, comedy and horror – with an art-house feel to it at times as well. It’s certainly a unique style of filmmaking, but considering it’s shot from the perspective of a psychopath… it works!

The-Voices-2

That psycho is Jerry Hickfang (Ryan Reynolds), a shy and awkward man desperate to fit in at his job at the Milton Bathtub Factory. He particularly craves the attention of a beautiful English girl in accounting named Fiona. One night, when Jerry excitedly heads home to tell his pets about the crush, his evil talking cat (Mr. Whiskers) suggests that he kills her. You think that’s strange? That’s just the beginning of this brilliantly twisted story.

And that’s perhaps why this particular film is getting such mixed reviews. I have seen a variety of star ratings from fellow reviewers ranging from 1 to 5. It took me a while to adjust to the craziness of  The Voices but once I’d accepted what I was seeing, I got much more out of it. If you simply can’t get past the madness yourself, this is not a film for you.

Credit to the casting. Choosing Reynolds as a socially awkward man who has trouble with the ladies may seem like an odd choice, but he pulls it off brilliantly. Let’s hope this marks the start of the lead actor taking a step back from awful rom-coms, and taking the odd risk here and there once again.
