FILM REVIEW: EDDIE THE EAGLE (PG)

The feel-good movie of the year (so far!).

Eddie the Eagle is a film that you’ll feel you’ve seen many times before. The characters are cliché and the outcome is predictable – but that’s OK. With heart-pounding superhero flicks dominating the big screen during recent months, alongside hard hitting Oscar contenders – an easy-going and uplifting film was just what I needed.

EDDIE-THE-EAGLE-POSTERThis ‘mostly’ true story focuses on Michael ‘Eddie the Eagle’ Edwards (Taron Egerton), the Gloucestershire plasterer who managed to represent Great Britain in the 1988 Winter Olympics as a ski-jumping contestant – despite being far from qualified for the job. Whilst most see Eddie as a big joke to the sport, a fictionalised rebellious coach (Hugh Jackman) spots potential, so becomes a mentor and friend in the process.

It is Taron Egerton who makes this film a success. He’s unrecognisable compared to his breakout role in Kingsman: The Secret Service. He gives 100% to this performance throughout – capturing the eccentric nature of the British legend to perfection.

Here’s what could have ruined the viewing experience. As great as it is having an A-Lister such as Hugh Jackman in the film, the way he was written into the script is disappointing. Playing a disgraced former ski-jumping champ desperate for a chance of redemption sounds cliché enough. It gets worse. He just so happens to be an alcoholic too. He’s a character we’ve seen a hundred times before. Luckily, he brings his own unique charm to the part that many actors would have failed to do.

Overall, if you’re looking for an uplifting film packed with laughs, this is the one for you.
