ESP Magazine’s March fashion spread highlights how to wear the latest trend in black and white with a pop of neon colour.
Styled by Natasha Fierro our great looks modelled by Face of ESP girls Lauren Hughes and Jess Lockhart are great examples of how anyone can work this style.
Black and White, worn from top to toe or in stripes and checks is a strong theme for Summer. Great for those of you who like some drama in their wardrobe. I’m a big fan of stripes as I think they can do lots for us in terms of balancing out our proportions. Verticals in a trouser can lengthen legs, horizontals in our tops can do the same. They also always look fresh so I really do love them.
Stripes are not as great on a really curvy body but where there’s a will, there’s a way! For interest, mix and match two different sizes (or colour) of pattern or wear one on your body and another in an accessory such as shoes or handbag.
Black from head to toe is one of our favourites. It can elicit drama but it can also be a safe choice, hiding unwanted pounds or letting us drift into the background. I’m not a fan of wearing top to toe black in the summer. It can make you feel hot and heavy so choose some colour if you feel lethargic.
If you like white, think of wearing it in lace, crochet, linen or broderieanglaise to keep you cool and sophisticated. Unlike the more dramatic black, it doesn’t need jewellery to make it stand out so keep adornments to a minimum.

Behind the scenes, getting the look…
To help achieve our look Mel from Melanie Richard’s Hair Boutique worked her magic on some striking back combed styles and make-up artist Andrea Connor completed the look with a retro inspired 50s/60s feel.
The top part of Lauren’s hair was set in heated rollers, spritzed first with GHD curl hold spray and left to cool down. The lower part was curled with GHDs. Once the curlers were removed the roots were backcombed and smoothed. The top section was slightly twisted and pinned at the back pushing up to create an even higher beehive, all finished off with Wella care and style dynamic fix and also GHD final shine. To create a softer day look the loose curl sections were grabbed and pinned into place.
Jess had a softer day look with her makeup keeping it very simple with hardly any eye shadow and only a slightly heavier shade in the crease. However, we kept the attention to the detailed 60s eyeliner flick and also used a mocha colour kohl pencil under the eye to soften up the heavy top lid eyeliner. To create the evening makeup we strengthened up the eyeliner on both the inner and outer parts of the eye and used a warm earthy colour palette for the eye shadow creating a smoky twist on the trend. Lips were kept nude.
Jess’ hair was spritzed with GHD curl hold spray and set in heated rollers all over to create root volume throughout. Once cooled the rollers were removed and the roots were backcombed and extra volume added by ruffling the hair whilst the head was tilted forward.
To transform her look into evening the hair was scraped into a ponytail lightly backcombed and then smoothed out. The hair was then swept from left to right and pinned into place. Both looks were finished off with Wella care and style dynamic fix.
Jewellery this season hasn’t taken too much of an era backstep and only going as far as 90s inspired, so think chunky chains, bright coloured cocktail gems and plenty of layering and stacking. This seelction is from Tahlia’s Closet on Cowgate.
