DRAGONS TAKE TO THE WATER!

Don’t miss all the action at the Peterborough Dragon Boat Spectacular this Saturday June 11!

Over 500 people will be taking to the water at the 18th spectacular Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival this Saturday. Thirty crews representing businesses and organisations from around the region will race the thirty foot brightly painted Chinese dragon boats three at a time over the 200m course on Peterborough Rowing Lake at Thorpe Meadows, watched by several thousand spectators.

Dragon-Pic-2-Peterborough-DBF---Drummer-in-actionRaces will take place every 10 minutes between 10.30am and 4.30pm and at the end of the afternoon, trophies will be presented to the winning crew, the second and third placed crews, the team that raises the most money for Festival nominated charity, Sue Ryder-Thorpe Hall Hospice, the top mixed crew and the ‘best dressed’ crew. The top fundraisers for Thorpe Hall will also receive a fabulous prize night at the greyhounds worth £600 kindly donated by Peterborough Greyhound Stadium.

Carol Lester of Festival organisers, Gable Events, comments, “We are expecting another large audience on the day to soak up the atmosphere and cheer on the teams. The Dragon Boat Festival would not be taking place without the enthusiasm and involvement of Sue Ryder-Thorpe Hall Hospice and we hope that the teams will continue to support this fantastic local charity. We are looking forward to a fun-packed day full of racing and entertainment”.

As well as races every 10 minutes throughout the day and a spectacular flypast from a Battle of Britain Lancaster Bomber at around 12 noon, there will be a host of family activities on the bank to keep teams and spectators entertained including children’s rides, fun inflatables, face painter, climbing wall and a variety of tasty food and drink stalls. Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall will also have an information point where you can find out more about their work. Entrance to the Festival is free to spectators and parking is available on site at Peterborough Rowing Club, Thorpe Meadows, PE3 6LN. Dragon-2014-Peterborough-Dragon-Boat-Festival

The 2016 Festival marks 25 years since Sue Ryder opened Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough. Every year, Thorpe Hall has to fundraise £1.5 million to provide their incredible end of life care so the support of the dragon boat teams is vital.

Thorpe Hall Fundraiser, Nilesh Patel, comments, “Our Thorpe Dragons team can’t wait to take to the water and meet the teams who have been so generous in pledging their support. We look forward to seeing you all there!”
