Katie was the special celebrity guest at Peterborough Regional College’s recent annual Excellence in Skills Awards Evening where student’s efforts and dedication over the past academic year were acknowledged in a lavish Oscar style ceremony.

The bestselling international author, public speaker, TV presenter and charity campaigner gave a moving and inspirational speech, touching the entire audience. She has had to rebuild her life after surviving a brutal attack in 2008, aged 24, in which she had sulphuric acid thrown in her face.

Katie set up ‘The Katie Piper Foundation’ in 2009 where it helps people with burns and scars to reconnect with their lives and their communities.

She made great emphasis during her speech on the night to how the mind is so much stronger than we think and if you stay strong mentally and think positive you can make it through almost anything.

Katie has written columns in magazines such as Reveal and Now Magazine. Channel 4 covered her remarkable story called ‘Katie: My Beautiful Face’ which was watched by over 3.5million viewers.

The winners on the night have all been nominated by their tutors for standing out during this academic year whether it be for academic excellence, progression and improvement or respect for others.

This year, the College held the annual event at Peterborough Arena, as major refurbishment work is carried out on their main hall facility. Peterborough Arena were quick to assist the local FE College in any way they could, allowing the student chefs and hospitality team to work alongside their professionals.

Students from Peterborough Regional College also got involved in the running of the event from the stage management, sound & lighting, catering and even the musical entertainment to open and close the night. Year on year, they continue to prove the College proud and this year was no exception.
