Two comically gifted actresses in the wrong place at the wrong time – and not just in the film.

Whether America’s comedienne of the moment Amy Schumer is your cup of tea or not, you can’t argue that she’s not been the star of successful comedies – with first major movie Trainwreck and TV series Inside Amy Schumer being highly-acclaimed pieces of work.

SNATCHED-POSTERWhile veteran actress Goldie Hawn – star of massive 80/90s comedy hits such as Private Benjamin, The First Wives Club, Death Becomes Her and Overboard – needs little introduction being a legend of the genre.

Simply put they’re the best at what they do, but even they couldn’t bring light to what’s essentially a very dark topic – even in the hands of highly-regarded Warm Bodies and 50/50 director Jonathan Levine who’d previously handled comedy pretty well.

This tonally uneven movie tells the story of Emily Middleton (Schumer), who’s dumped by her boyfriend the day before they’re due to fly out on an exotic holiday. Emily then persuades her polar opposite (overly cautious) mother Linda (Goldie) to go along with her and really start living – like in her good old days.

Soon into their trip, the mother and daughter get kidnapped and have to fight their way back home. The problem is, they’re going to need to work through their differences to do so.

The duo also depend on fellow American travellers to help them escape – cue the paranoid Barb (Toy Story’s Joan Cusack) and Ruth (Curb Your Enthusiasm’s Wanda Sykes) and a chiselled explorer type named Roger (Man of Steel’s Christopher Meloni).

The cast are great but unfortunately the film simply isn’t. It’s poorly edited and the script just isn’t funny. What you hear in the trailer is as good as it gets.

Yes, misunderstanding the word ‘welcome’ for ‘whale cum’ is sadly as good as it gets.

The actors seemed to be having a good time while filming the movie (it’s set in Hawaii for goodness sake) – but unfortunately the audience during my screening certainly weren’t.

There were a few sniggers here and there but no laughing out loud – which should have been the bare minimum given the talent involved.
