Gender-swapping is very much the in-thing right now.
We’ve seen it with Ghostbusters, Ocean’s 8 and now Overboard – the remake of the 1987 Goldie Hawn/Kurt Russell comedy.
This time around, it’s the female (Anna Faris from the Scary Movie series) who’s the struggling single parent who bumps heads with a rich brat (Geostorm’s Eugenio Derbez) on his yacht. Faris plays Kate, a widow who is barely making the rent despite working two jobs. Desperate to better her life, she studies for a nursing degree in what little time she has left after caring for her three daughters. Derbez plays Leonardo Montenegro, an arrogant international playboy with all the time in the world – mostly used to party with girls.
After Leonardo hires Kate to clean his boat, it is hate at first sight. He makes fun of her appearance, stiffs her on the bill, and even throws her expensive vacuum into the water. Yeah… not a nice guy!
Karma kicks in a little while later as Leonardo falls and hits his head – and consequently suffers from amnesia.
Upon discovering the selfish jerk’s predicament, Kate pretends to be his wife and convinces him that he is a hard-working family man.
Faris and Derbez’s on-screen chemistry mostly works thanks to their naturally charismatic ways. The pair do their best to keep the laughs coming thanks to their colourful expressions and comedic timing. But there’s only so far your talent will carry you when you’re working with a script that is pretty poor and forgettable (ironic, given that this is a film about amnesia).
Times have changed since the original Overboard movie, which focused around topics that would unmistakably raise eyebrows these days. Although the gender swap allows the remake to avoid some of the movie’s icky sub-texts, it still feels out-dated and sometimes even hard to watch.
I’m not sure the world needed an Overboard remake – but regardless, it deserved to be better than this.
