Kung Hei Fat Choi – Here come the dragons!

Shoppers will be given the chance to climb aboard a full-size dragon boat and beat the drum to mark Chinese New Year at Serpentine Green Shopping Centre on Saturday February 17.

The display is to promote the 20th Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival and the boat complete with paddles, drum and dragon’s head will be stationed outside Outfit between 9am and 5pm. There will be a chance to sit in the boat, try the paddles for size and enjoy a taste of this year’s Festival dished up by organisers Gable Events and charity partner Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice.

Chinese New Year starts on Friday February 16 and 2018 is the year of the dog.

This year’s Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival will be the 20th running of the spectacular team event and our ESP Motley Crew will be taking to the water for the second year running!

It will take place on Saturday June 9 at Peterborough Rowing Lake, Thorpe Meadows and up to 50 teams will battle it out over the 200-metre course, cheered on by their supporters who will be able to enjoy lots of bankside activities between races.

The dragon boats, qualified helms and all racing equipment will be provided, no previous experience is required, and each crew is guaranteed a minimum of three races. It’s great fun and we thoroughly recommend it so get your mates together – it’s really easy to do.

Crews are invited to raise money for Thorpe Hall Hospice before and on the day of the race. It will cost £3.3 million in 2018 to provide incredible care at the Sue Ryder hospice – £2.3 million of that has to come from fundraising.

Thorpe Hall fundraiser Nilesh Patel said: “We are delighted and proud to again be the charity partner for the Dragon Boat Festival and to be here to celebrate the 20th anniversary of what has become a ‘must do’ event in the region. The Festival works so well for businesses or groups as a team building day, as a charity challenge or a family fun day. We would love to see even more teams taking part this year representing Thorpe Hall to help us raise £20,000 through the 20th dragon boat festival.”

Joining in the fun at Serpentine Green on Saturday February 17 will be Festival media partners Connect FM and ourselves, ESP Magazine. During the day we’ll be joined by representatives of Festival sponsor Motorpoint, members of the Serpentine Green dragon boat team and Rocket the Hare, the mascot from Peterborough Greyhound Stadium, who are again providing the prize for the top fundraisers at the Dragon Boat Festival.
