WARWICK FLICKS THE SWITCH THIS XMAS

Plans for a fantastic festive season in Peterborough city centre are well under way with the city’s Christmas lights switch-on event set for Thursday November 19 at 7pm.

The Westgate Department Store is sponsoring the event which will take place outside the Town Hall on Bridge Street.

Actor Warwick Davis, who played Filius Flitwick in the Harry Potter movies, and Wicket in the legendary Star Wars films, will switch on the city’s Christmas lights along with members of the Peterborough United squad. The switch on event will be hosted by local radio station Lite FM and, of course, Father Christmas.

This year the festivities will centre upon Bridge Street and Long Causeway due to the redevelopment work taking place in Cathedral Square. This redevelopment work will not hamper any of the festivities and there’ll still be a 40ft Christmas tree taking pride of place as usual in the Cathedral Square area.

A Christmas market will be staged in Bridge Street and Long Causeway between  November 18 and 22 to coincide with the festivities.

The Westgate Department store in Park Road, Peterborough, is sponsoring this year’s city centre festivities. As part of the switch-on event, the store will host lots of festive activities for shoppers and will be treating all their customers to a special offer.

Councillor Gavin Elsey, Peterborough City Council’s cabinet member for regional and business engagement told ESP – “I am delighted that Westgate Department Store has joined forces with us to make Christmas just as special this year. We gave assurances earlier in the year that the work to develop Cathedral Square would not affect our Christmas celebrations and we have remained true to our word. I am looking forward to welcoming lots of people to the city to see the lights and enjoy the entertainment.”
