A new event which is both highly entertaining and educational is being operated by the Nene Valley Railway this weekend.
Both children and adults can see how the mail was collected and dropped off whilst on the move. This practice was last used on the National British Rail system in 1971.
The first event takes place on Saturday and Sunday, September 4 & 5 where children and parents will join Thomas’ special mail train at Wansford and help Postie Pete to sort the letters as the train travels to Yarwell station.
On arrival, passengers are escorted along the new footpath towards Yarwell Tunnel to see the mail train exiting the tunnel and dropping and collecting the pouches at speed.
Thomas makes three passes of the apparatus, giving everyone watching a good chance to take everything in.
Passengers then embark at Yarwell for the return journey to Wansford. There are 3 departures at 1100, 1300 & 1500 and each event last about one hour.
Children receive a postie pack to take home as a memento which includes a stamped, sorted letter and badge.
The number of passengers which can be accommodated at Yarwell to see this fascinating operation is limited, so booking is recommended – Tel. 01780 784444.
