FESTIVAL BRINGS A TASTE OF ITALY TO CATHEDRAL SQUARE
Visitors to Cathedral Square this weekend may think they have been transported to Venice or Rome when the Taste of Italy festival returns to Peterborough on Sunday October 17.
The event, starting at 12noon, has been organised again this year by Peterborough City Council in partnership with the Italian Community Association.
Loads of musical and dance acts will entertain visitors, including a performance from Aldo Maglietta and the Euro Quartet who hail from Peterborough’s Italian twin town of Forli.
Other attractions include an authentic Italian market, a display by Peterborough Scooter Club, a catwalk show by local hair salon Image International, displays of Fiat cars and Ducati motorcycles, and a demonstration of flag throwing.
There’ll be a chance to learn how to make authentic Italian pasta and sauce at a cooking demonstration by the Italian Community Association in St John’s Church.
There’ll also be pizza making demonstrations by local Italian restaurants Riva and Papa Luigi, giving visitors the chance to sample the results. Papa Luigi will also be holding a pizza eating contest.
A display of photos and memorabilia celebrating Peterborough’s Italian history will be held in St John’s Church.
The event will be rounded off at 8pm with a fantastic fireworks display on Cathedral Square.
Marco Cereste, chairman of the Italian Community Association told ESP – “This promises to be a fantastic event which celebrates all the great things about Italy and the Italian Community in Peterborough.
“I hope that the people of Peterborough will come and support this event and discover a bit more about Italian culture and traditions.”
Annette Joyce, the city council’s head of city operations told ESP – “The festival was a great success last year and celebrates one of the city’s strongest and most vibrant communities.
“Cathedral Square is a great venue for city centre events and this helps launch a packed programme of activity in the run-up to Christmas.”
