Local hard hitters the Peterborough Phantoms have announced their second annual Charity Ice Hockey Match to raise funds for local charities Active Inspiration, Peterborough Sports Aid Foundation and Cancer Research (via the Hockey Fights Cancer scheme).

The match, which will take place on Wednesday  March 3 at 8pm, will be full of spins, slips and trips as well as the usual thrills and spills as the prerequisite for the players is that they can NOT skate. The event’s been kindly sponsored by General & Medical Healthcare, a local employer and provider of Private Medical Insurance and the two teams of willing volunteers are a mix of local celebrities and representatives from the city’s leading businesses.

Local chair of Peterborough Sports Aid, Iain Crighton, told ESP – “This is a brilliant event. Last year I couldn’t stop laughing, and yet at the same time I had a huge respect for those taking part. The money we received last year helped yet more local youngsters achieve their sporting dreams and it’s nice to know that ice hockey is one of the sports we can support. With the Olympics just around the corner, it’s critical that we do everything we can to help our talented youngsters become our champions.”

General & Medical’s Managing Director, David Wildman added – “We’re proud to sponsor this fantastic event in support of local charities and I’m delighted that we’re sending along a player of our own.”

If you want to watch this unusual but hilarious spectacle on ice admission’s £3 on the door and it all starts at 8pm at the Planet Ice Arena, Bretton, Peterborough.

IMG_0033If you fancy sponsoring one of the willing participants you can do so via the Phantoms website at www.peterboroughphantoms.com so be sure to get along to the rink and see for yourself the on-ice talents of local celebrities such as Mikey Clarke, leading DJ with Connect FM, Mark Kerr of the Saxons American Football Team, Kev Lawrence and Abby from Heart FM Breakfast (pictured) and other representatives from the City Council, Thomas Cook, Yours Clothing, DalRod, Cross Keys Homes and many more local employers.

This is the second time the Phantoms have held the event, which they now hope will establish itself into an annual fixture. The first event last year raised over £4,000 so the club are aiming to beat that this year if possible. Supporting companies are also donating items for an auction that will take place shortly after the event so if you think you can support the event in any way please join the many people and companies who are already signed up – just contact Toby Clark on 0790 6699153 to find out how.

Chair of Local Charity Active Inspiration Jon Kynaston told ESP – “It is a very different event and we’re delighted to team up with the Phantoms again to support organising this event. Any monies raised for Active Inspiration will go back into provision of grassroots sport and leisure for the more deprived school age children in our city and we’re thankful to any who contribute.”
